Phalanxes at the Opening Ceremony

 On the morning of November 6, 2015, the fascinating campus of SUSTC was immersed in the dynamic colors in the wonderful sunshine. On the field and track playground with sunshine, the first SUSTC Games were held. SUSTC Chairman of Unvierstiy Council Li Ming, President Chen Shiyi and other senior leaders in SUSTC joined all students and faculty members were present at the Opening Ceremony, together with Director-General Zhang Heyun of Shenzhen Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau and Vice Director Dai Xingyi of Shenzhen University Town Administration Office.

Warm-up performance made by Tennis Phalanx

At 08:25 a.m. when all teams and phalanxes were ready, the first flame was on in front of the rostrum, followed by the second and third flame… When flames were lit, passion and dynamics started the burning. After that, the flames jumped, just like the hot and fervent spirits. By making careful observations, we could find they were tennis balls and it was the warm-up performance given by the tennis phalanx. The Opening Ceremony was chaired by Vice President Wu Chuanyue of SUSTC. The student representatives and faculty members from all academies showed up in the Opening Ceremony by parading in their respective phalanxes.

After the solemn national-flag-raising and SUSTC-flag-raising ceremony was made, President Chen Shiyi gave the opening speech. On behalf of SUSTC, he expressed warm congratulations to the 1st SUSTC Games and delivered thanks to all students and faculty members who made great efforts to preparations for SUSTC. He said, SUSTC, which is still in the start-up period, had done many first things in the past and will continue to do in the future. The first SUSTC Games hint the University is gradually expanding its scale and developing the campus culture, representing the upscale spirit of SUSTC students and faculty members. According to President Chen, SUSTC will, while fast developing the University, also give attention to its sport development. In its beginning, SUSTC had already established the great sport culture and tradition. “I hope that each student SUSTC are ambitious both physically and psychologically and always keep the most-prepared state of life, who seek pleasure and life in sport. Just like the theme in the sport, ‘fly youth; seeking dream’, our dream of building the world’s first-class university will definitely be realized.”

Director-General Zhang Heyun of Shenzhen Culture Sport and Tourism Bureau made a speech at the Opening Ceremony, expressing warm congratulations to the 1st SUSTC Games. He said, “This year marks the 35th Anniversary of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone and SUSTC will also celebrate its 5th anniversary. The development of SUSTC is closely related to Shenzhen. We will continue to push forward development of SUSTC and accelerate the building of academies by the students”. He hoped the SUSTC students can secure physically and psychologically healthy development and realize their ambitions, thus making their own contributions to the prosperity of Shenzhen and rapid growth of China.

Wonderful performance by the students

After the athlete and judge representatives made the oath at the Opening Ceremony, students from 4 major academies made the Tai Chi performance, which received the greatest cheers and applause. 

Unforgettable moments in the Games

On that day, students and faculty members competed in their respective groups in 78 competitions such as track, field, rope skipping and basketball shooting. Waves of loud cheers were heard on the playground. The events held earlier for the Games were swimming, tennis and Ping Pang, etc. The teams of Shuren Academy, Zhicheng Academy and Zhiren Academy won the first 3 places in the student competitions. And Administration team, Teaching Management team and Biology Department team won the first 3 places in the faculty competitions.
