President Chen Shiyi visits Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, gives Speech on Global Entrepreneurial Universities

On May 23rd 2017, SUSTech President Chen Shiyi, was invited to participate in the “KAIST Scientific Research Day”, during which he delivered a speech at the awards ceremony.

KAIST Scientific Research Day is an annual celebration during which many activities are organised, and awards are presented to the most excellent scientific research scholars. This year the best scientific research awards, innovative research awards, cross-disciplinary research awards and ten outstanding research awards were presented. The ceremony was chaired by Sir Heekyung Park, Vice President of Scientific Research, while Principal Sung-Chul Shin presented the awards to the winners. SUSTech President Chen then took over to deliver a congratulatory message to the audience.

In the afternoon, Chen was invited to give lectures to KAIST teachers and students on the topic of “the fourth industrial revolution, an era of global, entrepreneurial universities.”

SUSTech’s Associate Vice President of International Affairs and Chief Operating Officer Lu Chun was also invited and attended the ceremony.

 

The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology

The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, known as KAIST was established in 1971 and is located in Dade Scientific Research Park, Daejeon, Korea. KAIST has top international standards in education, research and development facilities, as well as their bachelor, master and doctoral programs. They excel in combining teaching and research, with a high level personnel training system, and the institute has made important contributions to South Korea’s technology and economic development.

KAIST has a total of nine research centers, including the Advanced Institute of Science, the Institute of Science and Education, the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, the Institute of Nano Science and Technology, the Institute of Mechanical Technology and the Center for Artificial Satellite Research, the Center for Brain Science Research and the Center for Semiconductor Design Education and Research. They also collaborate with 34 research centers and 62 different areas of high technology, earning the title of South Korea’s high-tech research cradle.

KAIST ranked No. 43 in the world rankings of QS World University in 2016; ranked No. 6 in the 2016 QS Asia Rankings; in the 2017 “Times of Higher Education 50 years below the top 100 institutions” KAIST ranked fifth in the world.
