In order to further improve awareness among professors and students at SUSTech in the case of fires, and improve the organizational capacity and evacuation procedures of the campus in response to emergencies, the university held the “2017 fire evacuation drill” on the afternoon of September 24 2017.
Fire drill simulations took place at the Lychee Hills’ residential colleges with fire alarms sounding. The university fire control room simulated monitoring the fire dangers, the fire department and university leaders reported the fire, and immediately started the fire emergency plan, which included a bilingual radio evacuation notice broadcast, during which staff and students practiced evacuation procedures. Fire extinguishing groups rushed to the scene, while medical groups came to treat the wounded.
Staff and students evacuated to the Lychee Hills parking lot where team leaders explained how to distinguish different fire types, how to use different fire extinguishers, precautionary measures when dealing with fire, using gas masks and other basic fire safety knowledge. Teachers and students tested various fire extinguishers on live fires.
Paramedics also demonstrated basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation and precautions to the students while firefighters gave a live demonstration of high pressure water lance, showed the types of fireproof clothing and invited students to participate in a practice session.
