Recently, five student teams comprised of members of SUSTech Computer Research Association and Supercomputer Society won the second prize of 2018 Asia Supercomputer Community Student Supercomputer Challenge (ASC).

The competition attracted over 300 teams from over 100 top-notch universities across five continents, including Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Saint-Petersburg State University and Texas A&M University. Guided by Associate Professor Li Jingzhi, Zhao Jiahua, an undergraduate student, along with teammates Liu Liangxi, Zheng Shuxin, Liu Yi and Guan Hao came 23rd in ASC 2018, which is the highest ranking SUSTech team has ever achieved.

The competition consisted required teams to complete various tasks, including designing and optimizing a server cluster. The goal of the contest is to learn about high-performance computers, develop research and applications in the field and build a platform where students can exchange ideas.

ASC is the world’s most popular supercomputer competition for university students. It is also one of the three main supercomputer competitions along with International Supercomputing Conference High Performance (ISC) in Germany and ACM/IEEE* Supercomputing Conference (SC) in the USA. ASC aims to promote communication and cultivation of young supercomputer talents across countries and regions through competition, to improve application and research of supercomputing, and to achieve scientific and industrial innovation through the technological driving force of supercomputing.

The ASC World University Supercomputer Contest was established in China and involves members from Japan, Russia, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, the United States and Europe. The international supercomputer community is very supportive of the concept because it is a great way to bring together young future experts, which will be a major driving force for innovation in the industry.
