Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Director of the Academic Committee of the Institute of Physical Structures of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Hong Maozhen was invited to Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). He was invited to give the 170th lecture in the SUSTech lecture series, where he spoke about “The Cutting Edge and Innovations of Science and Technology.”
Hong Maozhen was elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2003 as an academician, and of the Academy of Sciences of Developing Countries in 2005. His research is focused mainly on the preparation and application of new materials and devices, nanomaterials, and inorganic-organic hybrid materials. He won first prize in the 2001 Chinese Academy of Sciences Natural Science Awards and second in the 2002 National Natural Science Awards.
Hong Maozhen focused on four topics in his lecture. He spoke about the cutting-edge scientific and technological innovation value chain, nano-catalytic materials of coal chemical products, essential materials in new solid-state lasers and critical materials in kilowatt-level LED lighting. He introduced the major national scientific research projects he proposed and organized as China’s chief scientist. These projects included research on new nano-catalytic materials for fossil fuel conversion, nano-catalytic materials to replace precious metals, and the structural design of crystalline materials.
Hong Maozhen also spoke about his own research, such as the synthesis of one-dimensional nanowires containing metal cores, two-dimensional layered polymer materials with semiconducting properties, and optoelectronic crystals with independent intellectual property rights. He also talked about the numerous significant scientific and technological achievements that have created high-tech enterprises.
In his lecture, Hong Maozhen shared the relationship between the cutting-edge of science and technology, and innovations, to the audience. He also discussed how to create a scientific and technological innovation system, combining technology integration and engineering R&D. Hong Maozhen spent time talking about building a scientific and technological innovation value chain.
