Last week saw Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) arrange nearly 300 students and faculty members to head to the headquarters of Tencent, a major employer in Shenzhen. They went for the launch of Tencent Open Day, also known as Tencent T-DAY2018, an opportunity for students to get a better understanding of how Tencent operates as a technology company.

T-DAY2018 is Tencent’s first open day with technology as the main theme. They set up a creative sandbox with numerous cutting edge and innovative products that would invite attendees to understand and experience the latest technological trends. The event also used their products like WeChat and QQ, in conjunction with growth technologies like Internet+, security, three different AI labs, games, and other business areas, to exhibit to the attendees.

One activity that attracted the interest of students was a game called “On my way to School.” The game represents the life of rural children and the difficulties they experience in getting to and from school. In-game, players must avoid wild dogs, puddles and rocks, but in-game purchases allow players to raise funds for improving the lives of those children.

Visitors also used the public welfare sand table to develop an understanding of the donation-audit-feedback process. This continues Tencent’s push for transparency in participating in over forty thousand public welfare programs and partnering with thousands of public welfare organizations.

The T-DAY2018 Technology Medical Center Consultation Desk helped visitors navigate through different scenarios, with the Tencent Medical Team answering medical questions. Such an assistant is registered with doctors and medical professionals and provides an invaluable opportunity to assist doctors in screening for cancer and other diseases while reducing hospital waiting times.
