Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) President Chen Shiyi was invited to give a keynote speech at the Symposium for the Development of Higher Education, Innovation and Technology in the Greater Bay Area (“the Symposium”). Hosted by the University of Hong Kong (HKU), President Chen Shiyi spoke about “The Road to University Innovation under the backdrop of the Greater Bay Area.”

When the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area Development Plan announced earlier this year, the Society of Hong Kong Scholars invited more than 260 scholars and entrepreneurs from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau to discuss the development of science and technology in this new era. Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam presided over the Symposium.

President Chen Shiyi was one of the 9 invited guests to give keynote speeches. He spoke about SUSTech’s path of innovation, reviewing the practices of cooperation with universities in HKSAR and Macau since the establishment of SUSTech. President Chen Shiyi expounded on current areas of cooperation with HKSAR and Macau universities, pointing out that SUSTech had benefitted from working with these outstanding universities. Integrated regional development would benefit from multi-faceted two-way communication and increasingly in-depth cooperation.

President Chen Shiyi emphasized the mission of a university, as part of the relationship between it and its host city. Universities promote their cities, which in return, foster their higher education institutions.

He continued to discuss the role Shenzhen plays in supporting higher education, as well as the role SUSTech has played in integrating with the city, promoting urban development and knowledge transfer.

SUSTech remains committed to being one of the most innovative universities in mainland China, and will realize its mission as an essential part of the development of the Greater Bay Area.

At the conclusion of his speech, President Chen Shiyi proposed that universities across the Greater Bay Area should jointly promote the area to play leading roles in the new era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
