The 2022 China Marine Economy Expo (CMEE) was recently held at the Convention and Exhibition Center in Shenzhen.

With the theme of “Sharing the Deep Blue Through Technological Innovation”, this year’s CMEE was divided into seven exhibition sections, attracting more than 800 enterprises and universities to participate in the event.

The Department of Ocean Science and Engineering (OSE) at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) exhibited the broadband seabed seismometer, the new generation of EMC50Pro UAV array intelligent seawater sampling equipment, the intelligent sanitation/environmental protection underwater robot, and other new marine scientific and technological achievements at the Expo, fully demonstrating the R&D “hard core strength” of SUSTech.

The broadband ocean seabed seismometer, Pankun, independently developed by Prof. Ting YANG’s team from the Department of OSE, is the first scientific research achievement by the department that has completed technological transformation and been put into mass production.

In terms of scientific research, the broadband ocean seabed seismometer can observe lower-frequency natural seismic waves, which is equivalent to performing a CT scan on the earth to study its internal three-dimensional structure.

Commercially, it can assist in oil and gas explorations by monitoring artificial seismic waves.

The Trinity sanitation robot, independently developed by the team of Prof. Jian LIN from the Department of OSE, can be applied to recycle garbage on the surface and underwater in the future, playing an important role in protecting Marine ecology.

The “Unmanned aerial vehicle, unmanned surface vessel, and unmanned Underwater Vehicle”, a three-aircraft integrated intelligent sanitation robot system, can solve the current problem that high cost but low efficiency in the artificial collection of marine garbage.

Instead of artificial collection of marine garbage, the intelligent sanitation robot system not only improves the efficiency of marine garbage collection but also ensures personnel safety, especially in certain high-risk marine operating environments.

SUSTech will participate in exhibitions such as the CMEE to promote research and innovative advances in ocean science, and contribute to the development of Shenzhen into an international ocean city.
