At the end of July, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) was represented at the 2019 West Lake International Youth Music Festival in Hangzhou by Lou Qing (Class of 2020), Zhang Hanwen (2022) and He Wenjing (2021). Through the direction of Associate Professor Ji Tao from the SUSTech Art Center, Zhang Hanwen and Lou Qing claimed the gold medal for amateur Bel Canto style solos, while He Wenjing was the best amateur popular music soloist.

The West Lake International Youth Music Festival began in 2015, attracting young people from across China and all over the world. With the theme of “Music, Let Our Youth Be More Splendid,” the festival promotes Chinese music while embracing unique musical cultures from all over the world. It has played an important role in strengthening music and cultural exchanges between young musicians at home and abroad.

This year’s festival brought together 260 young musicians from various universities across China and around the world. The three SUSTech students stood out to win their gold medals. They were highly recognized by domestic vocal experts and reflect SUSTech’s commitment to the integration of “science and art.”

Award-winning student Lou Qing said: “I am very glad that I chose SUSTech. I can recognize and develop my hobby. SUSTech established an art center to broaden our horizons and encourage us to explore our hobbies. I’ve been able to meet my first vocal teacher in Ji Tao. I will continue to work hard to cherish every opportunity to come to power.”

SUSTech highlights the importance of a comprehensive education that incorporates sports, humanities, and art education in conjunction with science and engineering. It remains committed to cultivating top-notch innovative talents with a global vision, well-rounded skill set, and innovative abilities. SUSTech looks forward to more students continuing to develop their hobbies and talents.
