On August 2, 2025, the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS) held its Council Meeting in Singapore, officially selecting Shenzhen, China, as the host city for AOGS2028. Shenzhen was chosen for its open and inclusive environment, innovation and international competitiveness, and its rapidly growing scientific and technological capabilities.

Jian LIN, Chair of the AOGS2028 Shenzhen Committee, Director and Chair Professor of the Advanced Institute for Ocean Research (AIOR) at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), and head of Shenzhen Ocean University Preparatory Office, outlined three key strengths of Shenzhen: it’s role as a global scientific and technological innovation hub and a key center in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area; the world-class facilities of the Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center; and China’s science and technology capabilities in all key fields of geosciences.

The AOGS2028 Shenzhen Committee, chaired by Jian LIN, comprises 26 members from across the country, including Academicians Xiaofei CHEN, Dake CHEN, Minhan DAI, and Yigang XU.

Shenzhen’s successful bid marks international recognition of both China’s growing research capacity and the city’s ability to host major global academic events. The event is expected to further promote international cooperation in the Asia-Oceania region and globally.

The AOGS is a leading science conference in the Asia–Oceania region, covering a wide range of disciplines including space, planetary, atmospheric, oceanic, solid Earth, hydrological, biogeosciences, and interdisciplinary sciences. AOGS2028 will be held at the Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center and is anticipated to attract over 6,000 scientists from around the world.
