Earlier this week saw the China (Shenzhen) Integrated Circuit Summit (ICS2019) take place. SUSTech (SUSTech) was one of the sponsors of ICS2019, in conjunction with the Shenzhen People’s Government and key integrated circuit groups. The conference is critical for the development of the Greater Bay Area and its integrated circuit industry.

ICS2019 was themed around the innovation and applications of chip technology. There was a strong focus on innovations in IC design, 5G communication, Internet of Things, chip-machine interactions and industry-investment. ICS2019 also sought to promote China’s development of core IC chips to realize the transformation and upgrading of its information technology industry.

Shenzhen Deputy Mayor Wang Lixin attended the meeting and spoke at the opening ceremony, along with Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology Deputy Inspector Zhou Mutang and China Semiconductor Industry Association Deputy Secretary-General Gong Cheng. Senior leaders from all levels of government, party committees, industry groups and enterprise were all in attendance, along with nearly one thousand representatives of local IC industrialization bases, industry groups, experts, scholars and entrepreneurs.

SUSTech Acting Vice President and Professor Zhao Yusheng represented the theme report on cultivating future scholarship in chip industry.” He briefed the audience about what SUSTech has achieved in its short history, by examining the innovative measures it has taken as a pioneer of reform in higher education.

The SUSTech School of Microelectronics cooperates closely with national platforms such as the Shenzhen Industrial Base of Integrated Circuit Design, the Shenzhen Institute of Wide-band Gap Semiconductors, the 5G Innovation Center of Medium and High Frequency Device Manufacturing and a number of national level research platforms.

The SUSTech School of Microelectronics would continue to support the Greater Bay Area by conducting extensive industry-university-research among excellent integrated circuit enterprises in order to make positive contributions and open up technical bottlenecks in the IC industry.

At the summit, three signing ceremonies were held. One agreement aimed to promote industry-university-research cooperation to educate people about integrated circuits. A second agreement sought to develop a platform for the Shenzhen Pingshan Park National Integrated Circuit Base. The final agreement focused on constructing the Shenzhen Futian District National Integrated Circuit Laboratory

Later in the day, SUSTech was a co-sponsor of the forum on Integrated Circuit Design Methods, in conjunction with Microgroup.

Professors from various universities represented the theme report, and then the guests participated in a discussion about electronic design automation (EDA) industry-university-research cooperation. Everyone discussed the issues of EDA tool needs, EDA talent development, and how EDA production and research are closely integrated.
