Over the weekend, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) artist-in-residence Zhang Haochen performed at the Shenzhen Concert Hall as part of his “Future Definer” tour. His interpretation of classical music for a modern age showed profound musical sense, and his extraordinary skill presented an exquisite performance for the audience.

This is the first concert of his national tour and the first concert since becoming SUSTech’s first artist-in-residence at the beginning of the year.

In this concert, Zhang Haochen’s repertoire included Debussy’s Imagery II, Schumann’s Humor, Britz’s Piano Sonata No. 1 and Liszt’s Piano Sonata in B minor. The selection of works spanned the dimensions of time and space, showing the diversity and richness of music. The collection included French and German-Austrian works, leading the audience to appreciate the dual charm of French objective refinement and German romantic lyricism.

SUSTech Arts Center visiting professor Li Weiming led a group of teachers and students to the concert. Li Weiming said, “Music-loving science students may sympathize with and like Zhang Haochen’s intellectual analysis and thinking in his performance. He clearly grasps the contradictions in his works and communicates with the listeners with relatively calm and gentle narrative methods, applying sensitive and delicate tone changes to inspire people’s thinking.”

At the beginning of the year, Zhang Haochen signed to become an artist-in-residence at SUSTech. In the next three years, he will provide a series of lectures, master classes and forums for the SUSTech community. These art exchange activities will enhance our global vision and innovative ideas to the Arts Center at SUSTech while providing more opportunities for the development of art in Shenzhen.

Liu Yu, a distinguished conductor, was also invited to watch the recital. He said: “SUSTech has chosen a very challenging and entertaining concert.” Liu Yu believes that the SUSTech community can only get the most from music by experiencing the playing atmosphere on the spot and understanding its emotional impact, in order to develop their art education.

Next weekend, Zhang Haochen will give a piano master class at SUSTech, providing a unique musical experience for the SUSTech community.
