On October 23, the opening ceremony of the SUSTech Center for Biostatistics was held.
Acting Vice President Fuquan FANG, College of Science Dean Xueming YANG, Director of the Institute of Statistics, School of economics, Shenzhen University Shujia WANG and relevant experts and scholars from SUSTech and Shenzhen Children’s Hospital attended the ceremony.
Acting Vice President Fuquan FANG delivered a speech. He said that as important strategic emerging industries, biomedical and big data industries are developing rapidly in Shenzhen with broad prospects. With the geographical advantage in the Greater Bay Area and the discipline and talent advantages of SUSTech, the Center for Biostatistics can integrate talents and create an international-standard comprehensive scientific research base to realize win-win cooperation between the academic community and the industry and serve the construction and development of the country and society.
College of Science Dean Xueming YANG said that as a high-level platform, the Center for Biostatistics would mobilize resources to the greatest extent, promote interdisciplinary theoretical research, cultivate interdisciplinary talents with multi-disciplinary background, build a first-class biostatistical research base, and provide development and solutions for biological and medical technologies.
Director of the Center for Biostatistics Jianqing SHI said that the center would rely on the school’s advantages of high-quality resources and talent to promote cross-integration in research, develop innovative theories and technologies, solve practical problems in life science, and encourage innovative research on complex data and big data.

Professor Robin Henderson from the University of Newcastle and Professor Hongyu Zhao from Yale University also attended the ceremony online. They shared the latest research and achievements in the biostatistics field.
As a high-level scientific research institution of SUSTech, the Center for Biostatistics aims to build a comprehensive scientific research base with domestic and international influence, integrating basic research, interdisciplinary integration, consulting, professional personnel training, and industrial transformation.
The center will focus on complex data analysis (including precision medicine and public health research), adaptive clinical trials and data analysis, and statistical omics data analysis (including biology and efficient computing technology), and carry out research with the core units of the center in the biomedical field, and create a first-class data analysis laboratory. The center will also provide biostatistics related consulting services for biomedical enterprises to create value for enterprises and universities.
