SUSTech holds first annual conference of medical systems

From December 22 to 23, the first Annual Conference of Medical Systems organized by the School of Medicine at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) was held in the SUSTech Convention Center. It was co-organized by the affiliated hospitals of SUSTech and held in a combination of both online and offline activities.

Daping WANG, Vice Chairman of the Shenzhen Municipal Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Ling ZHANG, University Council Vice-Chairperson, Dongfeng GU, Acting Vice President of SUSTech, heads and representatives of relevant departments, and experts from ten medical and health institutions, including the First Affiliated Hospital of SUSTech (Shenzhen People’s Hospital Second Affiliated Hospital of SUSTech (Shenzhen Third People’s Hospital) participated in the event.

Daping WANG said that SUSTech is a pioneering model of higher education reform and is an example for the development of medical schools.

He hopes that the School of Medicine at SUSTech will develop into a world-class research institute rooted in Shenzhen, integrating science, engineering, medicine, and humanities to tackle the major issues affecting society.

In his remarks, Vice-Chairperson Ling ZHANG said that the development of the School of Medicine has always occupied a pivotal position in SUSTech in its aim of becoming a world-class research university.

He added that the Annual Conference of Medical Systems could provide a high-quality platform for experts in SUSTech’s medical field and make new contributions toward the development of SUSTech, Shenzhen, and the healthcare industry in the Greater Bay Area (GBA).

Dongfeng GU also gave an online speech at the conference. He said that the School of Medicine and the affiliated hospitals are integral parts of SUSTech and are committed to cultivating scientists and doctors looking to explore and advance cutting-edge basic science.

Mingzhao XING, Dean of the School of Medicine at SUSTech, said that the School has continuously explored innovative models and approaches toward medical education since its establishment. It has focused on the needs of Shenzhen’s healthcare industry and built a mechanism for interdisciplinary research with positive results.

He hopes that the various bodies involved in the SUSTech medical system will continue to strengthen cooperation and exchanges, continue to promote the development of the School of Medicine, and play a leading role in the development of Shenzhen’s healthcare industry.

At the conference, 36 scholars and experts in the healthcare industry presented keynote reports. This included Yihan CHEN, Academician of Tongji University, Guoxian PEI, Dean of the Third Affiliated Hospital to SUSTech, Qingshan GENG, Dean of the First Affiliated Hospital of SUSTech (Shenzhen People’s Hospital), Hongzhou LU, Dean of the Second Affiliated Hospital of SUSTech (Shenzhen Third People’s Hospital), and Lvhua WANG, President of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences Cancer Hospital (CAMS Cancer Hospital) Shenzhen Center.

During the two-day conference, participating experts and scholars held in-depth discussions on the development of the healthcare industry and the current trends, opportunities, and challenges faced in areas such as basic medicine, clinical medicine, preventive medicine, and translational medicine.
