On November 23, the 2023 list of the newly selected foreign members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was announced.

Lars Samuelson, Chair Professor at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) and Dean of the Institute of Nanoscience and Applications (INA), was elected as a foreign member of the CAS.

Lars Samuelson was born in Sweden in December 1948. He was elected as a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 2006 and a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) in 2007.

In December 2021, Lars Samuelson joined SUSTech. He is a Chair Professor and is also the Dean of the Institute of Nanoscience and Applications (INA).

Previously, he was a Professor in the Department of Physics at Lund University in Sweden, Deputy Head of the Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (MIC) at the Technical University of Denmark, and Professor of Semiconductor Physics at the Chalmers University of Technology. He is the Founder and, for the first 25 years, the Director of NanoLund, the primary center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in Sweden, with more than 400 scientists engaged.

Professor Samuelson has long been engaged in the research of condensed matter physics and is one of the outstanding scientists in the field of semiconductor nanomaterials, especially the growth of nanowires. He creatively proposed a combination of “top-down” and “bottom-up” epitaxial growth, and through this method, controlled the growth of perfectly ordered nanowire arrays. It has laid a foundation for the study of basic optics and the physical mechanism of carrier transport and promoted the development of nanomaterials application fields such as nanoelectronics, nanophotonics, solar cells, and solid-state lighting.

In recognition of its achievements in scientific discovery and engineering applications, he was awarded the IVA’s Great Gold Medal in 2022.

This year, 30 foreign members have been elected to the CAS. Professor Lars Samuelson’s election as a foreign member is the second time a faculty member from SUSTech has been chosen as a foreign member of the CAS.

Since its establishment, SUSTech has attracted a large number of top talents from all over the world, and five faculty members have been elected as members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and the CAS, including Chair Professors Zhenghe XU and Efim Zelmanov receiving the titles in 2021. The University has won the first prize in the Shenzhen “Talent Bole Award” for six consecutive years.

At present, the University has 1,409 faculty members, including 64 academicians (48 full-time), 68 international fellows, 46 MoE Distinguished Professorship recipients, 25 members from the National Special Support Program, 56 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholar titles, and 34 recipients of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholar titles. More than 90% of the faculty members have worked overseas, more than 60% have worked or studied in a global top 100 university, and high-level talents account for more than 50% of the faculty staff.
