From June 27 to 28, the Energy Institute for Carbon Neutrality and the Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering (MEE), both of the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), and the Federation of Guangdong Academicians hosted the Strategic Symposium on Energy Storage Technology in Beijing.

The symposium explored the strategic value, key scientific challenges, and core technical issues of energy storage technology in new energy systems.

Over 40 experts and scholars attended, including Hongwei FANG, Vice President and Provost of SUSTech, along with academicians and fellows from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), and the Royal Society of Canada.

Through keynote reports and speeches, the experts shared insights on cutting-edge trends, hot topics, and strategic perspectives in the field of new energy storage. The symposium was chaired by Tianshou ZHAO, Chair Professor of the Department of MEE, Dean of the Energy Institute for Carbon Neutrality, and Academician of the CAS.

Yang YUE, Project Director of the Department of Member Affairs at the General Office of the Academic Divisions, CAS, expressed gratitude to the participants and provided an overview of the background and requirements of the strategic research project. She looked forward to engaging with the experts and producing results with strategic significance for the development of the energy storage field.

In his remarks, Hongwei FANG emphasized SUSTech’s commitment to cutting-edge scientific and technological research. He highlighted the establishment of the Energy Institute for Carbon Neutrality, led by Tianshou ZHAO, as a response to China’s “double carbon” goals, focusing on solving key technical problems and producing significant results. He encouraged the experts to share their strategic views on scientific and industrial development frontiers, opening new prospects for innovation and application in energy storage technology.

Tianshou ZHAO delivered a comprehensive report detailing the strategic background, energy storage requirements, current challenges, and future development directions.

Afterward, other academicians, including Yimin XUAN, Liejin GUO, Shigang SUN, Peixue JIANG, Junfu LU, Chengshan WANG, Xiang GAO, Zhongwei CHEN, Hongguang JIN, and Cewen NAN, delivered keynote reports.

The experts then conducted in-depth discussions on interdisciplinary strategic research at the frontier of energy storage technology, forming numerous constructive views and consensus.

This symposium focused on scientific frontiers and interdisciplinary fields in energy storage, providing a platform for experts to analyze key issues, discuss development prospects, and promote the research and development of cutting-edge technologies.

It is part of the Frontier Interdisciplinary Strategy Research on Energy Storage Technology in New Energy Systems project, which is jointly supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and CAS, with Tianshou ZHAO serving as the project leader.
