On May 20, 2026, the sixth special meeting on Future Medicine at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) was held in the Dacheng Auditorium of the College of Business. Experts from the medical technology industry attended the meeting, including Songling WANG, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dean of the SUSTech School of Medicine and Institute for Homeostatic Medicine; Yi PAN, Dean of the School of Computer Science and Control Engineering at Shenzhen Polytechnic University and Chair Professor; and Ying XU, Chair Professor at the School of Medicine of SUSTech attended the meeting along with other industry experts.

This conference was hosted by the School of Medicine and the Institute for Homeostatic Medicine, with the theme of “Computational Biology and Future Medicine,” aiming to explore the enabling paths of AI applications and research in healthcare. In the keynote session, Professor Yi PAN delivered a presentation titled “The Development Status and Future Breakthrough Directions of Large-Scale General AI Models.” He analyzed the shift of AI from being purely data-driven to knowledge-driven combined with data-driven, emphasized the strategic direction and importance of “small models,” and demonstrated the practical applications and potential value of such models in clinical diagnosis, drug development, and other fields. Professor Ying XU delivered a report titled “Omics Big Data, AI, Chemical Homeostasis, Systems Methodology: Can We Finally Move Beyond Treating Symptoms Without Tackling the Root Causes?” exploring new paths in complex disease research.

During the keynote sessions, multiple experts and scholars shared their insights on cutting-edge research and practical achievements of digital intelligence technology in the biomedical field. Professor Wei JIA from the University of Hong Kong Medical School showcased large models constructed based on large-scale metabolomics data and their applications in aging assessment and disease prediction. Xin JIN, Vice President of BGI Life Sciences Research Institute in Shenzhen, introduced the value of single-cell sequencing and cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in understanding disease mechanisms and early diagnosis. Yi ZHAO, a researcher at the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered a report titled “AI Data Scientist BioMedAgent: Autonomous Scientific Analysis of Massive Biomedical Data.” Professor Lu ZHANG from the Department of Computer Science, Hong Kong Baptist University, shared the latest findings in a talk titled “Metabolomics-Based Foundational Model-Driven Analysis of Heterogeneous Aging Clocks and Disease Risk Stratification.” Senior Algorithm Engineer, Yu RONG, from Alibaba DAMO Academy, shared progress on the AI-based cellular world model “Lingshu-Cell,” simulating life processes at the single-cell level. Yingrui LI, Chief Scientist at Carbon Cloud Intelligence, demonstrated applications of digital biology hybrid computing in biopharmaceutical development and silicon-based biochips in testing and health monitoring.

Academician Songling WANG chaired the discussion session and further exchanged views on the role and significance of digital intelligence technology and homeostatic medicine in future medicine, as well as on how to gather forces to promote the development of future medicine.

This meeting focused on presenting the latest breakthroughs at the intersection of artificial intelligence and computational biology, showcasing to both academia and industry how the “integration of digital intelligence” can help solve medical problems and promote fundamental solutions.
