High profile visitors recently came to SUSTech including President of Shenzhen Laser Institute Li Yi, 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics winner Shuji Nakamura, and Dr. Steven DenBaars from the National Academy of Engineering of the United States. SUSTech President Chen Shiyi, Vice President of Research Tang Tao, Member of the President’s Office Wang Susheng and the directors and chairs of departments concerned were also present to welcome the guests.

The group held discussions which President Chen opened by welcoming the guests and briefing them on the current situation of SUSTech, including the management style, discipline construction, faculty, and scientific research strength. He said that Shenzhen Laser Institute and SUSTech’s Departments of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering were working on very close fields, and he hoped that both sides will strengthen communication and build a strong partnership.

Li Yi then took over to express his appreciation for the rapid development of the university in recent years and said he looked forward to the two organizations’ exchanges and cooperation in various fields and at various levels. He gave the example of laser lighting, which compared with LEDs, can significantly improve the efficiency of human lighting, is a new generation of solid-state lighting source, and offers practical applications which offer great potential for the future. He noted that this could be one of the fields on which they could work together in order to achieve new breakthroughs.

Nobel Prize laureate Shuji Nakamura, US National Academy of Engineering Steven DenBaars and their entourage then visited SUSTech’s laboratories and facilities.
