On March 17th, SUSTech was fortunate to have two masters of Beijing Opera Tan Xiaozeng and Yan Guixiang, to give some exciting performances for students and faculty. The event is part of SUSTech’s month-long Chinese Traditional Culture Festival, which aims to raise the awareness of “Li,” or Chinese etiquette, among young people in the campus.

Beijing Opera is a traditional Chinese art appreciated by people from all over the world. Listening to Beijing Opera can help us get a better understanding of Chinese culture and bring us to the amazing world of music.

Accompanied by traditional Chinese instruments, Wang Jiaqing performed a piece from the traditional Beijing opera, “Judge Bao and the Qin Xianglian Case.” He played the role of Bao Zheng, a Northern Song official renowned for his honesty. Liu Yijie performed a section from “Guifei Intoxicated,” showing the loneliness and depression of a drunken beauty waiting for her lover. Finally, Tan Xiaozeng finished with a performance from “The Battle of Mount Dingjun,” providing the perfect end to the show.

If you have missed this event, don’t hesitate to participate in some of the other exciting activities throughout the Traditional Chinese Culture Festival, ending on April 2nd . The Festival will end with a jazz concert by renowned Chinese performer Zhao Ke.
