SUSTech’s Fu Chenglong Won Neurogenic Prosthetic Technology Innovation Competition
Chris Edwards | 08/18/2018

The final of the Neurological Prosthetic Technology Innovation Competition was recently held at the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The competition is sponsored by the National Defense Science and Technology Commission’s National Defense Science and Technology Innovation Rapid Response Team. Fu Chenglong’s team from the Mechanical and Energy Engineering Department submitted two entries; “Robotized Power Thigh Prosthesis” and “Integrated Visual Dynamic Thigh Prosthetic Environment Recognition and Control System.” The Robotized Power Thigh Prosthesis won the “Second Place in Lower Limb Prosthetic Group” while the latter entry earned “Second Place in Individual Innovation Technology Group.” As a result, his research team will receive millions of yuan of research funding and industrial transformation support from both the Science and Technology Commission of the Military Commission and the Shenzhen Economic and Information Commission.

Award ceremony

The neuro-prosthetic technology innovation competition is sponsored by a wide range of institutions. The lead sponsor is the Rapid Response Group of the Science and Technology Commission of the Military Commission. They are joined by educational institutions such as the China Science and Technology College, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Shenzhen Institute of Northwestern Polytechnic University, Shenzhen Graduate School of Tsinghua University, Shenzhen Tsinghua University Research Institute and Shenzhen Aerospace Industry and Technology Research Institute. Other sponsors included the China Disabled Persons’ Federation, Shenzhen Economic and Information Commission, Shenzhen Nanshan District People’s Government, and Chinese Academy of Sciences Co., Ltd. As the top national competition for scientific and technological innovation and industrial application of neuroprosthetic technology for the disabled, the overall winning group can get 1 to 2 million yuan, and the single innovation group can get 500,000 yuan of project funding support.

The competition attracted top teams from Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Harbin Institute of Technology, China University of Science and Technology, South China Institute of Technology, Xi’an Jiao Tong University, Southeast University and other domestic universities. There were two parts to the final stage of the competition. Through lectures and demonstrations of physical function, the final groups consist of six projects (three upper limbs and three lower limbs). Five projects of the Innovation Technology Group won the finals.

Final scene

Fu Chenglong’s group has long been engaged in the principle of dynamic walking and its application in legged robots, prostheses, and exoskeletons. It has developed multi-legged robots, rapid motion generation over uneven terrain, bionic motion planning and reflection control in non-structural environments. Important progress has been made in the steps of high dynamic running, bionic driving mechanism and control, walking anti-interference control, energy recovery, and reuse.

The robotic power prosthesis is one of the main research directions of Fu Chenglong’s research group. The research team has developed two generations of robotic powered thigh prostheses, which have completed the stable walking mechanism of the human body and the dynamic thigh prosthetic structure. A substantial amount of research work, such as complex environment identification and adaptive control, and anti-interference control, has resulted in important research results.
