From October 25th to 28th, 2018, the 10th National Academic Conference on Fluid Mechanics was held in Hangzhou. Professor of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) President, and Academician Chen Shiyi was invited to make a report. Faculty members, post-doctoral and postgraduate student representatives from the Department of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering attended the meeting.

This academic conference was organized by the Fluid Mechanics Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Mechanics. Zhejiang University, China Jiliang University, and Zhejiang Mechanics Society were the hosts of the meeting this year. About 800 participants headed to the Zijingang Campus of Zhejiang University. Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and chairman of the Chinese Society of Mechanics Yang Wei spoke at the opening ceremony.

Chen Shiyi made a special report entitled “Thinking and Some Progress in Turbulence Research.” He expressed his love for the field of turbulence research. “What’s really interesting about hydrodynamics is turbulence,” he said, because turbulence is ubiquitous in natural and industrial applications, and is a major scientific and technical bottleneck in engineering applications such as drag reduction and elevation of aircraft, noise reduction of aircraft, and multi-material interface and multiphase mixing.

He reviewed the turbulence research methods and conclusions, before exchanging and summarizing these studies. He introduced the latest developments in turbulence experiments by Chinese scholars. He hoped that young people would seize the opportunity to study mechanics and constantly improve their scientific research level. Following his report, CAS Academician He Guowei presented the honorary certificate of the special invited report to President Chen.

The symposium covered a variety of important research directions such as turbulence, multiphase fluid mechanics, experimental fluid mechanics, and magnetic fluid mechanics. SUSTech Associate Professor of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering Liu Yu reported on the experimental study of the flow field and sound field characteristics of a structured porous outer layer. Postdoctoral researcher Yang Yan from Wan Minping’s research group studied the curvature of a two-dimensional magnetic fluid turbulent magnetic field line, while fellow postdoctoral researcher Chen Song from Wang Jianchun’s research group spoke about the curvature of two-dimensional turbulent magnetic fluid lines of force. Their reports sparked enthusiastic questions and extensive discussions among experts and scholars. It also expanded the visibility and academic influence of SUSTech’s Department of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering.

Young Chinese scholars studying mechanics dominated the symposium. As an outstanding representative, Wang Jianchun served as the host of the conference.

The National Conference on Fluid Mechanics was first held in Shanghai in 1963 and has since been held irregularly in Wuxi, Changsha, Beijing, and Shanghai. In recent years, under the auspices of the Chinese Society of Mechanics Fluid Mechanics Professional Committee, the National Fluid Mechanics Conference has become a regular, high-standard academic exchange activity every two years.
