On July 28, 2016, a donation and library naming ceremony was held in SUSTech. At the ceremony, the famed law firm King & Wood Mallesons (KWM), entrusted by a kind Hong Kong personage, donated HK$ 20 Million to the SUSTech Education Foundation; and the university library was named as LYNN LIBRARY. Mr. Simon Yung, Partner of KWM, Guo Yurong, Chairwoman of University Council and President Chen Shiyi attended the ceremony. Vice-President TANG Tao hosted the signing ceremony.

At the donation ceremony, President Chen Shiyi thanked the donor and KWM for their sponsorship. He announced that library represents the “heart” of a university where people could enrich their knowledge, carry forward advanced culture and dedicate themselves to academic innovation. And he’s certain that LYNN LIBRARY will become a landmark of SUSTech that best represents the university.  

According to President Chen Shiyi, higher education is a cause of public good which requires large and continuous investments. To seek more public sponsorship, especially charitable donations from visionary entrepreneurs and friendly personage of all social sectors, will largely stimulate the faculty and staff of a university. To SUSTech, these financial supports serve as the acknowledgment and encouragement for their accomplishments. Therefore, SUSTech will strive even harder to build itself into a research-based top-notch international university with distinctive characteristics, thus better serving its local economic progress.

Mr. Simon Yung said at the ceremony that SUSTech’s consistent pursuit of educational reform and technological innovation has reaped thankful achievements. With Shenzhen as its strong base, SUSTech enjoys a rather sound environment for development. He is also confident that SUSTech will finally become “Stanford University in China”.

Mr. Yung introduced that the kind donor of the library have time and again generously opened his wallet for China’s educational development and talent cultivation. With practical actions, he shows his support and concern for his country’s development as a Chinese descendant. As one who cares very much for China’s education cause, he believes that education should keep up with the world as a whole and that a nation’s future lies in the youth. He eagerly expects that students would commit themselves to public good and become graduates of the times who are patriotic, visionary, competent and aspiring. He wishes that students can enhance their team awareness, be bold to take responsibilities, think independently, and take a life road that is suitable for personal development and closely related to human progress.     

A guest speech was given by Professor Roderick Wong, the former Vice-President of City University of Hong Kong, who holds the Fellowship of the Royal Society of Canada and the Chevalier dans l’Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur awarded by the French government.

Guo Yurong took over the donated cheque of HK$ 20 Million from Mr. Simon Yung.

President Chen Shiyi awarded a certificate to the donor on behalf of SUSTech.

Then, the university officials and Mr. Simon Yung jointly unveiled the nameplate for LYNN LIBRARY.
