On the evening of Saturday, March 31st, 2018, the Residential Colleges at SUSTech hosted the Fifth Regional Culture Festival, with this year’s theme being “Coming from different places, gathering in SUSTech”.
Students prepared stalls from 22 of China’s provinces and were joined by students and staff with international stalls from countries like Cambodia, the United States of America and a variety of countries across Europe. Throughout the culture festival, you can enjoy the fantastic show of traditional customs as well as delicious food, feeling the unique culture remained in the food.
Students of SUSTech gave a wonderful performance, such as lion dance, musical performances using traditional instruments, folk dance, hip-hop, and rap in dialects, pushing the atmosphere to the climax. The lion dance is a form of traditional dance in Chinese culture in which performers mimic a lion’s movements in a lion costume to bring good luck and fortune. Students’ performance combines classic and modern elements, giving other students a better understanding of unique traditional Chinese culture.
Along with fantastic performance and delicious food, all sorts of activities also attracted large audiences. The other activities included sugar painting, making clay figurine, playing the diabolo, guessing lantern riddles and rolling hoops. International faculty members and students also showed some colorful elements of their international cultures to widen students’ knowledge of other cultures from around the world.
“Participating in the culture festival is a good chance for us to learn more about the unique culture of different areas and countries.” One participant said. “It’s also a good opportunity for us to show the culture of our hometown.”
The Regional Culture Festival promotes cultural diversity and multiple cultures of SUSTech and has become the largest and most popular activity organized by students at SUSTech.
