National Day Activities at SUSTech for 70th anniversary of founding of PRC

As part of the larger celebrations for the 70th anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) has been replete with activities honoring their homeland. Students, staff and faculty members have all expressed their love of country in their own ways in the last few weeks.

Events have included the Flag Raising Ceremony, the multi-venue broadcast of the parade in Beijing, the Freshmen Welcome Concert and a film festival.

Students have had numerous opportunities to express themselves through reading classic and modern pieces of poetry aloud, which they were able to share through social media networks. These platforms have seen faculty members partake in this multi-lingual activity that has encouraged to consider the role of science and technology in leading the nation forward.

Colleges, schools and departments have highlighted the importance of their scientific endeavors in supporting the rejuvenation of China and developing the future leaders of the new era. The residential colleges also arranged several activities, with students traveling to different parts of Shenzhen to get a better understanding of local history.

The role of traditional Chinese culture cannot be understated during this period, and Zhiren College held a calligraphy and painting competition, with the entries on display in an exhibition in their Activity Room. Shuren College upgraded the cultural atmosphere of their community by incorporating important festival information to their website.

The newest group of undergraduate students were presented with a gift at a dramatic performance from Zhicheng College, whose poster perfectly encapsulates the dynamism of the new era of the People’s Republic of China.

Each college took part in a drama competition, in which they were able to tell the story they felt best represented the movement from old China to new China. Each college provided a unique retelling of China’s development in tribute to their 70th birthday.

Shuli College took its students to a national exhibition that the Chinese story in the modern form of comic books. The attending students enjoyed the unique showcase of art that solidified their confidence in their culture.

Several student societies worked together to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China by marking the number “70” with students in Green Pine Stadium. As part of the event, SUSTech organized a seven-kilometer run around campus.
