On April 4, members of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) joined national mourning on campus. A national period of mourning was held on Saturday, this year’s Tomb-Sweeping Day, to commemorate those who succumbed to COVID-19.

The morning campus saw the flag flown at half-mast as a token of mourning. All SUSTech members in attendance observed in solemn silence for three minutes with the air raid sirens and horns of automobiles, trains and ships wailed in grief at 10 am.

After the ceremony, attendants felt that the somberness of the event reflected the responsibility that China has taken in dealing with this global challenge. Everyone around the world should continue to work together to fight COVID-19.

In commemoration of martyrs and deceased compatriots, national flags flew at half-mast across the country and in all Chinese embassies and consulates abroad, and public recreational activities were suspended nationwide.
