On June 17, 2021, Hongbo ZHENG, Deputy Mayor of Shenzhen, and his delegation visited the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). Yurong GUO, University Council Chairperson, and Qikun XUE, President of SUSTech, welcomed the guests.

Hongbo ZHENG acknowledged the achievements of SUSTech in the last ten years and the contributions it has made to Shenzhen through talent training and scientific research. He said that Shenzhen attaches great importance to the University and will continue to give its full support towards SUSTech. He hopes that SUSTech will continue its rapid development momentum and strive to achieve significant results in the city’s growth.

Yurong GUO said that SUSTech is one of the fastest-growing universities in China, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the strong support from the local government. It is closely linked to the development of Shenzhen and China. She added that SUSTech would continue to work hard to fulfill its mission and provide top talent and intellectual support for the development of the city, the province, and the country.

Qikun XUE discussed the University’s current state of affairs, its achievements, and its development strategy. He said that with the strong support of Shenzhen, SUSTech would continue to think outside the box in its mission to achieve significant breakthroughs in solving major scientific issues faced by the country and society. He added that it is vital to contribute to the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Fengliang LI, University Council Vice Chairperson, spoke about the progress of the Shenzhen Institute of Design and Innovation (SIDI). At the same time, Dongxiao ZHANG, Vice President and Provost, reported on the preparations for the establishment of the Shenzhen Ocean University. Yusheng ZHAO, Acting Vice President, spoke about the construction of major scientific research platforms.

Before the meeting, Hongbo ZHENG and his delegation also visited SUSTech’s Pico Center and Shude College to learn more about the University’s scientific research work and platforms, the college system, and talent training.

Qiuming CHEN, Director of the Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau, Youming WANG, Party Chief of the Shenzhen Science, Technology and Innovation Commission, and other representatives from the Shenzhen Municipal government also attended the event.
