Internationalization in action: SUSTech's influence continues to rise

As a new type of research university rooted in Shenzhen, the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) attaches great importance to international education and opening up to the world.

In 2022, SUSTech strengthened international collaborations with various international world-class universities, institutions, international organizations, and innovative enterprises, to create a high standard of international education and research at the University, and to enhance the attractiveness of high-end international talents and students to come to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and other pilot demonstration zones.

SUSTech carried out in-depth cooperation with Lund University, Federal Institute of Technology, ETH Zurich, and King's College London, making a major breakthrough in joint medical education, deepening friendly exchanges with the embassies and consulates of Switzerland, Sweden and France in China, and adding eight new international partner universities.

The undergraduate enrollment of foreign students has increased steadily in 2022, and the number and quality of admission have reached a record high. Out of the total number of students in the Class of 2025, 1.78 percent are international. The quality of enrollment remained stable, with an average admission score of 114, the same as last year.

The admission requirement has been raised, and the interview passing criteria must meet both the majority vote of the professor and the overall majority vote. The number of countries of origin of international undergraduate students increased by four, bringing the cumulative total to 23, most of which are countries along the "Belt and Road".

Progress has also been made for non-degree international undergraduates. There were 28 non-academic international undergraduate students. A total of 19 exchange students from five international universities (Korea University, University of Toronto, State University of New York at Stony Brook, Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, and Hong Kong Polytechnic University) came to study at SUSTech.

Two undergraduates from the University of Toronto were accepted to participate in the summer research project, and seven undergraduates from the National University of Singapore participated in SUSTech's international innovation and entrepreneurship education program online.

On January 12, SUSTech hosted the International Centre for Higher Education Innovation under the auspices of UNESCO (UNESCO-ICHEI) Annual Partnership and International Institute of Online Education (IIOE) meeting. The theme of the event was "Digital Transformation of Higher Education in Asia-Pacific and Europe: For a Better Future and Beyond."

SUSTech continues to enhance its academic influence. In April, Qikun XUE, President of SUSTech, spoke at the 2022 Times Higher Education (THE) Innovation and Impact Summit co-hosted by the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden; Hongwei FANG, Vice President and Provost of SUSTech, attended the 2022 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance Annual Meeting and President Forum; Li JIN, Vice President of SUSTech, attended the QS Higher Ed Summit: China 2022 and gave a speech at the event.

The University launched institution introduction pages on the Nature Index website and the Top Universities website, including institutional introductions, images, and monthly research highlights. For the THE World University Rankings and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings, electronic posters were launched on their official websites, which received 400,000 and 220,000 hits, respectively.

SUSTech will continue to explore more international cooperation models and accelerate its global influence.
