Important progress made in the preparatory work for affiliated hospital and ocean university

In 2022, the Affiliated Hospital of the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) and Shenzhen Ocean University obtained the budget approval and project code of the Shenzhen Municipal Development and Reform Commission, respectively, and important progress was made in the preparatory work. It has been significant progress for SUSTech to implement the strategies of the "14th Five-Year Plan for the Development of Health in Shenzhen" and the "14th Five-Year Plan for the Development of Education in Shenzhen", as SUSTech has comprehensively improved the incubation model, started the construction of the Affiliated Hospital of SUSTech and Shenzhen Ocean University.

Two projects, including the School of Medicine and the Affiliated Hospital of SUSTech, were approved by the Shenzhen Municipal Development and Reform Commission on November 1 and November 8, respectively, and the projects officially entered the construction stage.

The new construction area of the hospital will reach 167,600 square meters, with a total investment of over 1.6 billion yuan. The two projects have a total construction area of 332,600 square meters and a total investment of over 3.2 billion yuan, and are expected to be put into use within three to four years.

This year, the Affiliated Hospital Construction Office promoted the progress of the project, and completed the preliminary design work, such as the medical process, scheme, and budget, to ensure the construction moves forward in an orderly way. The feasibility study report was approved by the Shenzhen Municipal Development and Reform Commission on February 15, 2022, with 800 beds and a total construction area of 167,600 square meters. Currently, the construction is expected to begin in January next year.

SUSTech led the construction project of Shenzhen Ocean University. In 2022, the project achieved major progress in the following aspects: the Shenzhen Municipal Development and Reform Commission officially granted the project code of the Shenzhen Ocean University; The conceptual design plan of the campus was reviewed; The Shenzhen Ocean University project is located in Baguang Area, Dapeng New District, and has been approved by the Municipal Planning Bureau for Pre-Examination and Site Selection.

To match the development needs of Shenzhen's marine industry, Shenzhen Ocean University draws on the experience and operational model of internationally renowned ocean universities, and formulates a blueprint for running the new university with 8,000 full-time students on campus. Shenzhen Ocean University sets its goal to become a world-class university and institute for ocean research, and benchmarks with top universities and departments worldwide, such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) - Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). In the preparation stage, Shenzhen Ocean University relies on joint construction units such as SUSTech to recruit students from 2022, and gradually increase the number of students.

The discipline construction will follow a pattern of "small but refined" with a focus on the construction of core marine engineering technology disciplines and cross-featured disciplines.  Shenzhen Ocean University aligns with the needs of the global ocean center city construction, including economic industry, scientific and technological innovation, cultural ecology, comprehensive management, global governance, and other fields, and focuses on building distinct discipline groups.

In the future, the Affiliated Hospital of SUSTech and Shenzhen Ocean University projects will contribute to building SUSTech into a world-class research university, nurturing talents for Shenzhen to build a world-class talent hub, and jointly building an international medical center city and a global ocean center city with common prosperity, co-construction, sharing, inclusiveness, and harmony.
