From December 17 to 18, Chen Shiyi, president of South University of Science and Technology of China (SUSTC), held talks with principals of renowned high schools and granted interviews to Yunnan’s mainstream media, marking the beginning of SUSTC’s 2016 Undergraduate Enrollment in Yunnan.
On December 18, SUSTC Talent Selection and Training Seminar (Yunnan) was held in Kunming. Zhu Huashan, deputy director of the Department of Education of Yunnan Province and Chen Shiyi, president of SUSTC were present. Gao Xiang, president of the Yunnan Provincial Academy of Education, Recruitment and Examination, chaired the seminar. Among other attendees were the principals of 17 key high schools including High School Affiliated to Yunnan Normal University; Zhao Yusheng, director of the Office of Research, SUSTC; Zheng Chunmiao, dean of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, SUSTC; Zhao Hongjun, director of the Office of Admission, SUSTC; Xue Zheng, director of the Office of Student Affairs, SUSTC and the teachers on the Yunnan Enrollment Group.
At the seminar, teachers from key high schools and leaders from the Department of Education of Yunnan Province watched SUSTC’s enrollment media. Zhao Hongjun introduced SUSTC’s general information as well as enrollment policies and arrangements in 2016.

Chen delivered an ebullient speech at the seminar. As an experimental field for China’s education reform, after five years of development, SUSTC has formed its distinctive features and model of schooling, and built a high-level faculty. Particularly, being located in Shenzhen known as a capital of innovation has laid a solid foundation for SUSTC to train top talents. SUSTC enrolled students in Yunnan from 2015, and Yunnan’s high-quality students have make SUSTC’s sources of students more diversified. SUSTC expected to continue enrolling students with solid foundation, independent thinking, innovative spirit and concentration in Yunnan in 2016, he noted.
SUSTC has been at the forefront of education reform and innovation since its founding, thus becoming a pacesetter in education reform; some of its teaching and training models are well worth studying and learning, Zhu Huashan said, expecting SUSTC to fulfill the enrollment work in Yunnan, and pledging that Yunnan will create better platforms for examinees to choose their desired universities.
High school leaders spoke at the seminar
At the seminar, high school leaders had heated discussions with Chen and the teachers on the enrollment group, exchanging ideas on issues such as SUSTC’s discipline and major setting, model of talent training and graduate career development.
Prior to the seminar, Chen granted an interview to several mainstream media outlets including YNTV and Yunnan Daily, introducing SUSTC’s educational concept and future development direction.

Following the seminar, SUSTC made presentations and gave scientific lectures at High School Affiliated to Yunnan Normal University, Kunming No. 1 High School, Kunming No. 3 High School and Kunming No. 10 High School., and held the contract signing and plaque awarding ceremony of SUSTC’s “outstanding student source bases” at Kunming No. 3 High School and Kunming No. 10 High School. Over 1,000 teachers and students from the four schools attended the presentations and lectures.
