| 07/21/2016

Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) and Johns Hopkins Medicine International (JHI), Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (JHUSOM) have entered into a multiyear collaborative agreement to advise on the planning and initial development of a proposed elite medical school at SUSTech, a pioneering new public research university based in Shenzhen, China that aims to become a global leader in science, engineering, life and health sciences. The contract-signing ceremony was held on July 19 in Wuzhou Guest House, Shenzhen. Participants of the meeting include leaders from both universities and officials of Shenzhen government.

At a time when far-reaching public and private transformations in the Chinese health care system are reshaping health care delivery, biomedical research and medical education, this collaboration creates the opportunity for Johns Hopkins and SUSTech executives, faculty and administrators to collaborate on the conceptual and operational development of a new educational model that seeks to prepare future Chinese leaders in medicine. Johns Hopkins is a longtime international leader in advancing medical education, most recently developing its innovative Genes to Society medical curriculum, which emphasizes a new model of health care combining individualized or precision medicine with public health principles.

Under the terms of the collaborative arrangement, Johns Hopkins experts will provide comprehensive support and advice to the SUSTech-led Medical School Planning Committee in areas vital to the new medical school including curriculum and faculty development, admissions and educational administration policy, facilities and technology infrastructure, clinical clerkship and hospital affiliations.

According to the contract, leaders and professors of SUSTech and JHU would develop a close collaborative relationship and an overall planning committee will be found. The committee consists of key personnel from both sides and would be in charge of the main issues in the future. In the coming years, SUSTech would receive intensive support from JHU and JHM in curriculum design, talent introduction, academic exchanges, facility construction and administration.

This collaboration will promote knowledge transfer, faculty and academic exchanges between one of the world’s leading academic medical centers and the unique and innovative academic environment being developed at SUSTech in consultation and collaboration with local and national leaders.

SUSTech  School of Medicine (in Preparation)

The School will adopt a new model of medical education  and capitalize on the university’s institutional strength in research, faculty capacity and state of the art facilities, in search for an all new pathway for a successful collaboration between excellent Chinese universities and leading global partners. The education goal of the School is to develop students who will become future medical leaders in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China and beyond.

Johns Hopkins University (JHU)

The Johns Hopkins University, founded in 1876, was America’s first research university, the first in the Western Hemisphere based on the European research institution, with a mission both to teach and to advance human knowledge through discovery. Johns Hopkins was established on what was then a revolutionary idea, that universities must do more than teach the collected wisdom of the past. Founding President Daniel Coit Gilman argued that they must also advance human knowledge and apply that knowledge for the common good. Gilman’s philosophy guides today’s Johns Hopkins, which remains a world leader in education, research, and patient care, and where faculty and students are partners in learning and discovery. Together, they explore what makes us human — culture and society, art and literature, science, health and medicine. Together, they study what drives the universe where we live. Together, they use their knowledge to make tomorrow better.

Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM)

Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM), headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland, is a $7.7 billion integrated global health enterprise and one of the leading academic health care systems in the United States. JHM unites physicians and scientists of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine with the organizations, health professionals and facilities of The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System. JHM’s vision, “Together, we will deliver the promise of medicine,” is supported by its mission to improve the health of the community and the world by setting the standard of excellence in medical education, research and clinical care. Diverse and inclusive, JHM educates medical students, scientists, health care professionals and the public; conducts biomedical research; and provides patient-centered medicine to prevent, diagnose and treat human illness. JHM operates six academic and community hospitals, four suburban health care and surgery centers, and 39 primary and specialty care outpatients sites under the umbrella of Johns Hopkins Community Physicians. JHM extends health care into the community and globally through Johns Hopkins Home Care Group, Johns Hopkins Medicine International and Johns Hopkins HealthCare. The Johns Hopkins Hospital, opened in 1889, has been ranked number one in the nation by U.S. News & World Report for 22 years of the survey’s 26-year history. For more information about Johns Hopkins Medicine, its research, education and clinical programs, and for the latest health, science and research news, visit www.hopkinsmedicine.org.
