At 4 PM on January 3, 2017, the 2017 Undergraduate Admission Kick-off Ceremony & Presentation of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) was held at Shenzhen Middle School (SZMS), raising the curtain of undergraduate admission in 2017. Present were Guo Yurong, Chairperson of University Council; Wu Chuanyue, Vice-President, Provost and a chair professor of SUSTech; Yu Dapeng, a chair professor of SUSTech and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS); Chen Xiaofei, a chair professor of SUSTech and a CAS academician; Principal Zhao Li, Vice Principal Xing Xiangzhao and Vice Principal Wang Dongwen of SZMS, over 500 senior three students, as well as journalists from a dozen media outlets.

SZMS is among Guangdong’s first group of first-class schools, a model school for the new-round national elementary education curriculum reform, the high school from which SUSTech has admitted the most students in Shenzhen, and among SUSTech’s first group of excellent student source bases. After admission kicks off every year, SUSTech’s admission groups comprising professors will head to high schools in 22 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions across the country, to introduce SUSTech’s educational concept and features to senior three teachers and students, as well as students’ parents.

Guo Yurong gives a lecture

Guo gave a keynote lecture entitled A Place to Fly Your Dream. She introduced SUSTech’s educational concept and progress, giving the reasons for choosing SUSTech. SUSTech is the most innovative university, as well as a university most concerned about student growth, choosing SUSTech is choosing an exciting learning experience, she said. Since the founding of SUSTech, the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee, the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government and Shenzhen people have expected SUSTech to be a world top university. After years of development, SUSTech has the ability and responsibility to carry out the expectations, so you choose SUSTech to join the growth of a university and experience these exciting historical moments, she contined, expecting outstanding students to join SUSTech to grow with SUSTech, fly their dreams and change the world.

Yu gave a keynote lecture entitled Tapping, Shaping, Responsibility. He said, SUSTech has high-level teachers who are SUSTech’s groundwork, because teachers not only teach, but also guide students how to conduct themselves and warn them to avoid opportunism, laziness and fraud in order to be academically and commercially accomplished. Students must study hard, improve cultivation and build up their bodies so as to assume their historical and social responsibilities.

Chen gave a keynote lecture entitled Why Choose SUSTech. He emotionally told the reason why he chose SUSTech. SUSTech’s reform and innovation measures and educational concept had a strong appeal to him, and SUSTech is an ideal place for him to achieve the goal of talent training and scientific innovation. SUSTech’s measures have refreshed and warmed current higher education, which is the reason for his choice. A good university truly loves students, SUSTech has done so through a series of measures, SUSTech and its teachers are trying their best to help all students achieve their ambitions.

Xing delivered a speech on behalf of SZMS. He highly agreed to SUSTech’s educational concept and training objective, recommended SUSTech to students, and believed that SUSTech would be the pride of Shenzhen and China.
Tang Bin, an associate professor at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, SUSTech and Head of the Guangdong Admission Group, introduced SUSTech’s admission policy for 2017. As an alumnus of SZMS, he encouraged more students of SZMS to join SUSTech. Zhao Hongjun, Director of the Office of Admission, SUSTech, presided over the presentation. The teachers from the Office of Admission, the Office of Public Relations and the Guangdong Admission Group attended the presentation.

Students listen carefully

In 2017, SUSTech will admit students through comprehensive evaluation for the sixth consecutive year. According to its preliminary plan, SUSTech will admit 1,000 undergraduate students early from 22 provinces across the country, and will admit at least 20 from each province and the most (some 150) from Guangdong Province. Students should file applications online between December 20, 2016 and April 30, 2017.

In admission in 2017, SUSTech will value comprehensive quality evaluation and include it in admission scores for the first time. Besides, the applicants who have been awarded in the finals of the National High School Olympiads in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Information Technology and Biology will be admitted preferentially; the freshmen ranked among the top 200 in science in respective provinces in the college entrance examination are expected to be fully sponsored for one-year exchange studies at world top universities, and those ranked among the top 400 will get the Presidential Scholarship, and SUSTech will continue to offer the Freshmen Scholarship covering not less than 70 percent of freshmen.
