Shenzhen, January 3 (people.com.cn Xia Fan Correspondent: Tan Jianwei)–On January 3, the 2017 Undergraduate Admission Kick-off Ceremony & Presentation of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) was held at Shenzhen Middle School (SZMS). This year SUSTech is expected to admit 1,000 undergraduate students and will include comprehensive quality evaluation (accounting for three percent of the total score) in the admission criterion for the first time. All students who did volunteer work or were involved in inventions will be given bonus points.

According to its preliminary plan, SUSTech will admit 1,000 undergraduate students early in 2017. Admitted students will be from 22 provinces and municipalities, including Beijing, Hebei, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Fujian, Jiangxi, Shandong, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Chongqing, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan and Shaanxi.

This year SUSTech will continue to admit undergraduate students through comprehensive evaluation. According to the evaluation criterion, the college entrance examination score of a student accounts for 60 percent of the total admission score only, the result of the aptitude test (computer session and interview session) independently organized by SUSTech accounts for 30 percent, and the student’s high school GPA accounts for 10 percent. Besides, the examinees who have been awarded in the finals of the National High School Olympiads in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Information Technology and Biology will be admitted preferentially.

Notably, compared to the previous years, high school GPA accounting for 10 percent of the total admission score will be composed of high school academic results (7 percent) and comprehensive quality evaluation results (3 percent).

Comprehensive quality evaluation involves 10 items, including innovation practice, disciplinary specialty, artistic and sports qualities, social responsibility, ideological morality, etc. Apart from those with inventions and awards won in discipline competition, those who did volunteer work, conducted social surveys and are skilled in pen writing will be given bonus points.

This is the first time for SUSTech to quantize comprehensive quality evaluation and include it in admission scores. “Such admission orientation can effectively weaken the inclination to the college entrance examination, and guide students in focusing on their interests, and tapping and developing specialties, so as to accomplish all-round development and growth healthily,” said a head of SUSTech.

Besides, SUSTech will launch enhanced scholarship programs this year. The examinees who have met SUSTech’s comprehensive evaluation requirements and were ranked among the top 200 in science in respective provinces in the college entrance examination will be included in the “international elite” program, and SUSTech will appropriate some 400,000 yuan to sponsor them for one-year exchange learning at universities ranked around the world top 10. Those ranked among the top 400 will get the Presidential Scholarship of 100,000 yuan.

This year SUSTech will practice full-process paperless free online application in admission. Examinees should file application online between December 20, 2016 and April 30, 2017. In mid-May, SUSTech will organize experts for the initial evaluation of examinees’ application materials, and those who have passed the initial evaluation will be qualified for the aptitude test (computer session) independently organized by SUSTech. The computer session and interview session of the test will be held in mid and mid-to-late June by province and municipality respectively.

Since admitting undergraduate students for the first time in the spring of 2011, SUSTech has kept the number of admitted students under 1,000 under the principle of “fewer but better”. From 2012 to 2016, SUSTech admitted 188, 388, 610, 937 and 994 undergraduate students respectively. There are currently some 330 introduced teachers and over 2,900 undergraduate students at SUSTech, with a teacher-student ratio of 1:9, comparable to world top universities.
