Last week, venues across Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) were packed with our newest group of undergraduates, eager to learn about the plentiful options for majors and research across every College and School.
Students were afforded the opportunity to learn about the requirements for the different majors, in order to start planning their electives and research directions, according to their own potential interests. Professors laid out the key points and difficulties of each major, allowing the Class of 2023 to get an insight into different scientific disciplines. This is the first time SUSTech has offered a unified introduction to every department and school at SUSTech.
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) was joined by the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Statistics and Data Science (SDS). CSE Deputy Director Hao Qi talked about the future development of the department, before Mathematics Deputy Director Li Jingzhi and SDS Professor Tian Guoliang took many questions about their respective departments.
The Department of Finance, the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) and the School of Microelectronics had one of the largest lecture theaters on campus. Several EEE associate professors covered the different majors within the department, as well as touching on the career development opportunities. Li Rui from the Department of Finance also touched on career opportunities by fleshing out the research, internship and employment prospects. Faculty members from the School of Microelectronics fleshed out their development and their industry-university research cooperation.
The College of Science brought its Departments of Physics, Chemistry and Earth & Space Science (ESS) together. Physics Deputy Director Ye Fei provided an amusing take on his fellow faculty members and the content of his department’s majors. ESS Deputy Director Liu Kaijun provided an insight into the many opportunities for field trips to practice their theoretical skills. Chemistry Associate Professor Xu Zongxiang reflected on the history of his department, and hoped that any potential chemists would want to work at the cutting-edge of the discipline.
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), the Department of Ocean Science and Engineering (OSE) and the School of Environmental Science and Engineering (ESE) gave interested undergraduates some unique insights into their majors, from the world under water to the positive impact on the environment, and the materials made by their students.
The School of System Design and Intelligent Manufacturing (SDIM), the Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering (MEE) and the Department of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) attracted many students. SDIM featured its emerging engineering education model, which has seen a lot of attention. MEE Head Rong Yiming spoke about the future development prospects for students entering his discipline, while MAE head Zhang Xiaowen talked about “Mechanics and Modern Technology.”
The Department of Biology teamed up with the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the School of Medicine to give a medically themed presentation. The Department of Biomedical Engineering showed off their running assistant device, while Professor Zhang Wenyong of the School of Medicine talked about the high requirements for entry, including physics, English proficiency and high GPA. Biology Deputy Director Hou Shengtao had the students laughing with his fulsome report about his department, inspiring many students.
