After the recent approval from the Shenzhen Municipal Construction Department, construction has started on the Phase II site of the campus. Once completed, the project will extend over 513 000 square meters and will add 4 new sectors to the already existing infrastructure:
– Sector 1: School of Sciences, Public School Building, School of Business, Center of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Center of Humanities and Social Sciences
– Sector 2: SUSTech Center, Academic Exchange Center
– Sector 3: School of Engineering
– Sector 4: Students Dormitory
Further to these plans, Phase II will also see some extra outdoor renovation works.
The project will be divided into two stages. The first will be focusing on the four sections around the lake, which will be closed off in order to drain and prepare the construction sites. Safety will be high on the list of priorities and the access to the area will be restricted during the construction, which should take around 6 months to complete.
The second stage of the project will be landscaping, and is currently in the conception stage. During the landscaping phase, certain parts of the campus will also be restricted for safety reasons, these locations and the duration of the restricted access will depend on various factors and will be made available as soon as it is necessary.
Breakdown of sector 4 – Dormitory section
The new dormitory section will significantly extend the housing capacity of SUSTech, with 11 new facilities. 4 will be reserved to the PhD students and cover an area of 61 132 square meters, while 2 will be for the masters students covering 27 000 square meters. And finally the remaining 5 units will be for the undergraduates and will cover an area of almost 37 000 square meters.
Complete plan for the 4 sectors
There are 4 major points which the new plans are centered around. These include developing the infrastructure in an environmentally-friendly way, integrating the scenic resources and nature into the campus in the traditional “Hushan homes” style.
The second highlight of the new designs will be the location of the college on the waterfront, and the academy which will be connected by a series of pathways through this natural environment.
The third key point of the project is the PhD dormitory sector which will use innovative architectural features to optimize space, and will serve as a transition for the students and graduates who are hoping to become university teachers.
Finally, the fourth point of the development plan is to expand in the process other campus facilities such as the library, the park areas and the canteen as well as other campus resources. The construction of a modern, all-weather pedestrian pathway network will allow our students to access the whole campus all year round.
