Innovation winter camp for top STEM middle school students comes to successful close

On Sunday 24th November, the “2019 Excellent Middle School Students STEM Innovation Experience Camp” had its closing ceremony, with Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) President Chen Shiyi attending and speaking.

President Chen Shiyi shared his experience of visiting world-class universities, saying that the historic unprecedented opportunities that have arisen from the dual development drivers of the pioneering demonstration zone of Shenzhen and the industrial transformation of the Greater Bay Area. He hoped that students will consider their personal development in line with the needs of the nation. President Chen Shiyi encouraged the students to look after the physical, mental and emotional health during their studies, to help prepare for their National College Entrance Examinations (NCEE) in June.

Department of Ocean Science and Engineering (OSE) Professor Liu Qingsong spoke about his research & teaching experience at SUSTech. He reflected on the rapid changes that have taken place in both Shenzhen and SUSTech, pointing out that their high-tech environments promote the integration of modern science, innovation & entrepreneurship into society. Professor Liu Qingsong anticipated that more students would come to SUSTech in the future to create a world-class research university.

No. 9 Middle School of Baotou City student Shi Hanyu and Xi’an Tieyizhong International Cooperation School student Yan Jiayi thanked SUSTech for hosting the camp. They had gained a lot from it and fundamentally agreed with the educational philosophy of SUSTech.

In the four days of the camp, the students attended cutting-edge lectures, undertook scientific experiments in the laboratories and experienced a range of university activities on campus. They got the chance to explore Shenzhen, make new friends and develop new memories of their time at SUSTech.

At the end of the camp, the students spoke of their desire to come back to SUSTech for their university studies. They praised SUSTech for its unique characteristics, charming campus, English teaching models and opportunities for international exchange.
