On November 26, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) hosted the inauguration of its newest ministerial research center, the Ministry of Education (MoE) Engineering Research Center for Future Communication Integrated Circuit (IC) (MoE Engineering Research Center). SUSTech Acting Vice President Zhang Dongxiao and School of Microelectronics Dean Yu Hongyu was joined by Nanshan District Deputy Mayor Lian Cong and Shenzhen Education Bureau Higher Education Department Director Yan Hui, along with many SUSTech professors.

MoE Research Center Executive Deputy Director Professor Yu Hao discussed the construction plans for the MoE Engineering Research Center, before SUSTech Acting Vice President Zhang Dongxiao unveiled the Center with Deputy Mayor Lian Cong with other faculty members.

Acting Vice President Zhang Dongxiao said that the MoE Engineering Research Center would actively create a focus that integrates scientific and technological innovation, talent pipelines, technological transformation and industry-university research cooperation. The MoE Engineering Research Center will place an equal emphasis on both teaching and research, in order to form a sustainable development capability for the integrated circuit industry of the Greater Bay Area

Nanshan District Deputy Mayor Lian Cong pointed out that the scientific research foundation of SUSTech is a perfect partner to Shenzhen’s IC industry, so the establishment of the MoE Engineering Research Center will foster numerous opportunities for the commercialization of technological applications. It will further promote the industrial support the industrial transformation of the Greater Bay Area and the improvement of China’s high-end communication devices.

Shenzhen Education Bureau Higher Education Department Director Yan Hui said that the MoE Engineering Research Center is an essential component for innovation in colleges and universities who organize engineering and technological research and development. They are driving forces behind the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, as well as developers of innovative talent pipelines and cultivators of future leaders for the new era within various disciplines with international outlooks. The MoE Engineering Research Center will promote interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary research to achieve technological breakthroughs and the transformation of scientific achievements.

The MoE Engineering Research Center is guided by the National Science and Technology Development Plan and seeks to meet strategic needs in areas such as innovation-driven 5G development and key core technologies suitable for current & future communication applications. Their specific research foci will include future communication IC design, intelligent storage and computing integration, wide band-gap semiconductor materials & devices, and advanced IC manufacturing processes.
