Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) students were showing their computer programming skills at the recent Asia-East Continental Finals of the 44th International Collegiate Program Contests (ICPC Asia East Continent Final). Over the weekend of December 14 and 15, SUSTech-zzz was selected to ICPC EC-Final as they won a gold medal in ICPC Asia (Shanghai).

The SUSTech-zzz team from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) was ranked 24th among all universities in the competition after 5 hours of competition. A total of 386 teams from 169 universities and six high schools from across mainland China, the Greater Bay Area and North Korea competed.

The SUSTech Programming Competition Team was established in September 2017. CSE Assistant Professor Tang Bo and researcher Shen Yun are responsible for managing and training the team, which trains regularly as well as conducting high-level training during vacations. They also improve their technical abilities through regular competition, and the ACM-ICPC set of competitions is the pinnacle of those competitions. Their competitive nature has shown significant success in 2019, with the team claiming four gold medals, six silver medals and sixteen bronze medals in all competitions.

The International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) is a project sponsored by the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), an international computer authority (ACM), designed to demonstrate university teamwork and write under pressure. The program, analysis, and problem-solving contest have evolved into the most influential computer competition for college students. The ICPC competition is also a computer competition with international influence currently hosted by domestic universities. The EC Final is the highest-level ICPC competition in Asia.
