On December 17, the Department of Ocean Science and Engineering (OSE) at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) held its first marine science quiz night. The Graduate School of Oceanography and the OSE Undergraduate Student Union worked together to co-host the event. College of Engineering (CoE) Party Committee Deputy Secretary Bao Chuanwen, OSE Deputy Director Chair Professor Zhang Chuanlun, OSE Associate Professor Hou Chao, and Assistant Professors Zhou Youmin, Guo Zhen, and Feng Xingya all judged the quiz.

Many students of all levels attended the quiz night, with undergraduates, masters and doctoral students from many disciplines preparing to pit their wits against each other. OSE Deputy Director Chair Professor Zhang Chuanlun welcomed everyone and encouraged them to get involved in oceanography and marine science.

The quiz night featured both team and individual competitions. After the first two rounds of competition, Team 5G was in first place with their in-depth professional knowledge. However, the impromptu Q&A round saw “Spongebaby” and “606-666,” gain significantly with their high scores in this third and penultimate round of the competition.

The final round offered teams the opportunity to significantly increase the points tally on each question when competing for the final round. Ultimately, Team 5G won the night with 220 points, ahead of Bee Flower Conditioner. Third place went to “606-666,” a team of three undergraduate students from environmental science, electrical engineering and physics. Their lack of marine science knowledge did not hold them back as they finished on the podium.

The individual competition had each team nominate one person to compete, with limited opportunities to get help from their teammates. The increased difficulty in this section saw accuracy levels drop, and the difficulty level rise significantly. A moderately conservative approach from OSE undergraduate Huang Zixuan saw him claim the best individual prize.

At the end of the night, CoE Party Committee Deputy Secretary Bao Chuanwen affirmed the effectiveness of the event and encouraged the Department to have more such events on campus.
