Earlier this month, a series of Guangdong provincial departments issued projects and key laboratory approvals. Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) has received several crucial projects and prestigious key laboratories that would advance scientific and technological development in a diverse set of disciplines.
The Provincial Fundamental and Applied Fundamental Research Fund Committee announced the recipients of their Joint Project Research Funds. Not long after that, the Provincial Natural Science Foundation revealed the projects they would fund in 2020, to a total of 15 million RMB.
Professor Gong Yi from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) had his project for “Research on New Communication Network Architecture Based on Mobile Edge Computing” selected. His project is the first major provincial team project of SUSTech that has been approved.
Professor Gong Yi is collaborating with Shenzhen University (SZU), the University of Hong Kong (HKU), and Shenzhen Pengcheng Laboratories to research large-scale communication network architecture. He is hoping to optimize the deployment of devices and data flow to solve problems of device communication access and data flow. These problems have come about from the massive uptake of mobile internet devices and their associated computing power.
The projected is based on “end-edge-cloud” mobile computing architecture and technology. This technology is thought to be the fundamental infrastructure needed for smart cities and solving problems behind the Internet of Everything. The results of the research will help build a mobile edge-computing research and engineering laboratory in the Greater Bay Area. The laboratory will further cement SUSTech’s role in supporting related research and industries across the region.
SUSTech will also develop one key project, two outstanding youth projects, nineteen face-to-face projects, and 47 youth projects.
SUSTech will be building two Provincial Key Laboratories, following an announcement from the Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) will build the Guangdong Key Laboratory in Brain-Like Intelligent Computing, led by Professor Yao Xin. The Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Catalytic Chemistry will be guided by the Department of Chemistry Chair Professor Xia Haiping (Executive Dean of Grubbs Research Institute).
The Guangdong Key Laboratory in Brain-Like Intelligent Computation will focus on the fundamental issues of brain-like intelligent computing. It will take three primary research directions: evolutionary brain intelligence, group brain intelligence, and credible brain intelligence. They will take a macro-view of their research to find industrial applications for their research. The Guangdong Key Laboratory in Brain-Like Intelligent Computation will work towards becoming a world-class brain-like intelligent computing center with a collaborative industry-university research platform that promotes smart industries across the Greater Bay Area.
The Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Catalytic Chemistry is aiming to solve significant challenges in the green catalytic synthesis of drugs, catalytic polymerization, catalytic technology for the production of hydrogen from methanol, and the fundamental theories of catalytic chemistry. The integration of outstanding theoretical and experimental catalytic chemists with industrial experts will see increased use of high-throughput catalyst screen platforms to promote applications in new medicine, new energy, and new materials.
At present, our university is building eight key laboratories in Guangdong Province.
When it comes to the liberal arts, SUSTech continues to receive funding for major provincial research projects. SUSTech will construct five key projects from the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education, including one social science class. SUSTech will also lead a key experiment of the Provincial Department of Education. Throughout its history, SUSTech has built four key laboratories with funding from the Provincial Department of Education.
One breakthrough announcement was the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education funding a Key Social Science Project led by Social Sciences Center Chair Professor Tang Jigen. Similarly, the Department of Finance Associate Professor Yang Zhaojun will lead a Guangdong Province Philosophy and Social Science “13th Five-Year Plan” Annual Project.
There has been further funding for a soft science key project and a general project. EEE Associate Professor Jian Linni and the Department of Finance Assistant Professor Chen Kun will lead the projects. SUSTech also received 6 Special Research Projects of Philosophy and Social Sciences for universities in Guangdong Province.
