Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) has always had a strong commitment to professional development among its educators. With that in mind, the Center for Language Education (CLE) has been working with all departments to improve the English competency of teaching assistants (TAs) across campus.

CLE launched a series of workshops led by lecturer Matthew Jellick. He has used his global approach to pedagogy to show different teaching methodologies. The interactive lessons have been used to show TAs from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) how to develop both online and offline lessons.

Doctoral students working as TAs within CSE have found that their overseas learning experience has supported some aspects of their English teaching competency. The eight-week workshops encouraged the TAs to consider their teaching styles from different perspectives, including from the aspect of the students.

The innovative and practical workshops were also an opportunity to expand on CLE’s influence within SUSTech and the teaching of English within China. Teaching in English provides many more opportunities for the SUSTech community by widening their global vision and enhancing their critical thinking skills. Going forward, CLE will operate further professional development programs for all departments.
