On December 10, the opening ceremony of the 2021 Excellent Middle School Students STEM Innovation Camp was held at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech).
Qikun XUE, President of SUSTech, and Dongxiao ZHANG, Vice President and Provost, attended the ceremony.
President Qikun XUE spoke at the ceremony. In his remarks, he said that Shenzhen is the most dynamic high-tech center in China and the engine for developing and growing a high-level talent pool in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).
He hoped that the students would enjoy their time during the camp and experience the innovative atmosphere and culture of SUSTech.
Vice President Dongxiao ZHANG also spoke at the event. He said that the camp is a national exchange platform for outstanding middle school students and a perfect stage to experience SUSTech up close. He hoped that the students would enjoy their experience at SUSTech and their time in Shenzhen.
Qinghu MENG, Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), used many vivid examples and his scientific research achievements to introduce the development history of computers and artificial intelligence (AI).
Other speakers at the ceremony included Kefu HUANG, Director of the Office of Teaching Affairs, Hao CHEN, Executive Deputy Director of SUSTech Global, Yuan LI, Director of the Center for Language Education (CLE) of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Yubang HOU, Deputy Director of the Admissions Office, and Yunhao ZHANG, Undergraduate student representative and 2021 national scholarship recipient.
The three-day training camp is organized by 20 departments at SUSTech and divided into six groups. After a preliminary selection of 640 high school students, more than 250 outstanding science students from around the country were selected for the camp.
Students will listen to multi-disciplinary high-level lectures during the camp, undertake scientific experiments in the SUSTech laboratories, and participate in various activities on campus.
