Affiliated Hospital of SUSTech project officially launches

On June 28, the Affiliated Hospital of the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) project was officially launched.

Daping WANG, Vice Chairman of the Shenzhen Municipal Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), attended the ceremony and announced the start of the project.

Guests in attendance included Zhifeng CHEN, Deputy Director of the Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau, Juping CHANG, Deputy Director of the Shenzhen Municipal Health Commission, Xu HUANG, Second-Level Inspector of the Public Works Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality, Qingguo WEI, Chairman of Shenzhen Construction Engineering Group Co Ltd., and leaders from the Nanshan District Health Bureau.

Heads and experts of more than 15 medical and health institutions, including the First and Second Affiliated Hospitals of SUSTech, representatives of affiliated high schools, and more than ten construction and design units, were also in attendance at the groundbreaking ceremony.

Members of the University’s leadership team that attended the event included Dongfeng GU, Susheng WANG, Mingzhao XING, and Zheng XUE.

The ceremony was presided over by Pengfei WANG, Member of the Presidential Executive Council and Director of the Preparatory Office of Affiliated Hospitals.

Xu HUANG delivered a speech at the ceremony. He said that the foundation stone, which was laid for the official launch of the Affiliated Hospital of SUSTech project, is of great significance.

The construction of this project is conducive to promoting SUSTech as a “Double First-Class” University, increasing Nanshan’s and Shenzhen’s high-quality medical resources, and will play an important role in promoting the development of the city’s medical and health services.

He hopes that all parties involved in the project will strive to build the Affiliated Hospital of SUSTech into a landmark in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), contribute to building a medical highland and promote the development of a healthy China, and make significant contributions to Shenzhen’s growth as a pioneering demonstration area and model city.

In his remarks, Qingguo WEI discussed the project’s engineering, noting it would cooperate with the relevant bodies and organizations and that it would be carried out with high standards, high efficiency, and high quality.

Acting Vice President Dongfeng GU also spoke at the ceremony on behalf of SUSTech. He expressed his heartfelt thanks to the municipal and provincial committees and offices, the Public Works Bureau, and all participating enterprises and construction units who have supported this project.

He emphasized that the Affiliated Hospital of Southern University of Science and Technology project would rely on the disciplines of science, engineering, and medicine at SUSTech, with the advantages of business and humanities and social sciences, adapt to the development requirements of “new medicine” education, and set a benchmark for domestic and international high-level hospitals. He added that it would strive to build Shenzhen into a global city and create a world-class new type of research hospital in the GBA.

Therese Hesketh, Executive Dean of the SUSTech-KCL School of Medicine, sent her congratulations online on the launch of the Affiliated Hospital of SUSTech project.

She said that as an international medical education cooperation unit with SUSTech, the construction of this new hospital would be an opportunity to expand the scope of international cooperation based on high-level and high-standard clinical medical education and research, make full use of resources on both sides, share the experience of international medical education and Sino-foreign cooperation, and further improve the quality of international medical education.

Jianqin GU, Executive Deputy Secretary of the Joint Party Committee of the School of Medicine at SUSTech and Executive Deputy Director of the Preparatory Office of the Affiliated Hospital, reported on the preparations for the construction of the hospital.

He said that the hospital would set the benchmark for international model hospitals, recruit and cultivate outstanding talent teams from around the world, and explore the implementation of a new mechanism for professional hospital management and operation.

The Affiliated Hospital SUSTech is a key project in the third phase of campus construction, and the hospital will be located on the southeast side of the University’s campus and the east section of Xueyuan Avenue.

The planned area will reach 56,834 square meters, with a total construction area of 167,600 square meters, 800 beds, and a total investment of over 1.6 billion yuan. The hospital is scheduled to be completed and put into use by the end of 2026.
