On October 9, 2026, the 24th Annual Meeting of China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CSIAM) opened in Lanzhou, and Professor Kailiang WU from the Department of Mathematics at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) won the 8th CSIAM Youth Science Award of Applied Mathematics.

Professor WU has long been engaged in scientific computing, numerical analysis, and machine learning, as well as their interdisciplinary applications in computational fluid dynamics and computational physics. Especially in the fields of structure-preserving computation and data-driven flow map learning, he has built a research system where theory, algorithms, software, and applications support each other. His research results have been published in journals of applied and computational mathematics such as SIAM Review, Nature journals such as Nature Communications, astrophysics journals such as MNRAS, and machine learning conferences such as ICML. He has received awards such as the 2019 China Mathematics Society “Zhong Jiaqing Mathematics Award,” the 2024 Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award, Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award, and SUSTech’s 2025 “President’s Research Award” and “Young Professor Award.” Since 2024, Professor WU has been listed for three consecutive years in Stanford University’s annual Global Top 2% Scientists ranking based on scientific influence.
Founded in 1990, CSIAM aims to build connections between the mathematical community and the industrial sector, promote close collaboration among mathematicians, engineers, and enterprise managers, address mathematical challenges arising from economic development and technological progress, and advance research and education in applied mathematics. Established in 2012, the CSIAM Youth Science Award of Applied Mathematics recognizes outstanding young researchers in industrial and applied mathematics and supports the development of young talent in the field.
