On May 11, University Council Chairman Guo Yurong visited Daba Town, Heping County in Heyuan City for poverty relief work with a delegation including Director of Office of Party Affairs and Administration/Secretary-General Chen Siqi and Chair Professor in Biology Guo Hongwei.

Despite the rain-sodden, muddy path, Guo’s delegation and local leaders went deep into the fields of Chaotian Village to learn about passionfruit planting. SUSTech invested in this project to help alleviate poverty and acquire wealth locally. Later, the delegation visited the cultural center and chicken farm to know more about the development of the village.

Accompanied by leaders and staff of the village work team, the delegation visited different low-income families. Guo Yurong visited the family of Ye Yaobang and Ye Xuepeng and listened carefully to their living conditions, daily struggles and sincere suggestions. Guo offered them allowances and presents while encouraging them to overcome poverty and achieve prosperity with their hard work and wisdom.

After their visits, the delegation and local leaders had a meeting on overcoming poverty in Chaotian Village.Local attendees include Heping Prefectural CPC Standing Committee Member and Futian District Work Team Leader Ye Hanhui, Director of Heping County Poverty Relief Office Yang Guoyan, Daba Town CPC Committee Secretary You Xiaoping, and Chaotian Village Officer and CPC Branch Secretary Wu Jialu.

At the meeting, Guo Yurong talked about the CPC’s 19^th National Congress Reports where the government emphasized agricultural and rural development. She expected the implementation of the policies in the reports soon and called on everyone in society to participate in poverty relief in rural China. She promised to continue offering financial and technological aids to Chaotian Village, and help every villager achieve prosperity with their own hands.

Following the meeting, Guo Yurong led her delegation to Heping County CPC Committee Secretary Chen Jinsong’s office. Chen expressed her gratitude to SUSTech for its poverty relief efforts at Chaotian Village and looked forward to collaborating further with Chaotian Village. Guo Yurong introduced the development of SUSTech and promised further collaborations in poverty relief work.
