Recently, Guangzhou hosted a Provincial Education Forum for schools and universities across Guangdong. Works from SUSTech’s “Maker Workshop x Project Climb” were presented at the venue as successful innovative science and technology projects. They attracted the attention of many guests, including Fu Hua, Standing Member and Communications Department Director of Guangdong Provincial CPC Committee.

Various provincial departments of Guangdong sponsored the exhibition, which received 124 exhibits or projects from 76 universities, high schools, middle schools and elementary schools.

“Maker Workshop x Project Climb” was born out of SUSTech’s urgent need for innovation in science and technology. Founded in 2016 by the Office of Student Affairs and Shude Residential College, Maker Workshop serves as the base for students to carry out innovative projects. Student clubs can join the workshop, with the 3D Printing Club, Artinx Robot Team and Model Airplane Team taking managerial and operational roles. Students with workshop membership can apply for a research grant called “Project Climb,” which targets students at science and technology universities conducting innovative research.

University authorities have been very supportive of “Make Workshop x Project Climb” by making detailed financial plans, inviting experts for valuable opinions and guiding students through the grant application process. Between 2015 and 2017, 21 innovative projects successfully received the grant on a provincial level while 47 received university funding. The total amount of funding received is approximately 1.6 million Yuan (over US$250,000) at the moment.
