The Journal of Fluid Mechanics (JFM) and the Department of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) worked together to host the 2018 JFM Symposia: China (2018 Fluid Mechanics Journal). More than 150 experts and scholars attended the seminar, including University President and Professor of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering Chen Shiyi, JFM deputy editor Charles Meneveau (Johns Hopkins University), JFM Associate Editor and Batchelor Award winner Detlef Lohse (the University of Twente, the Netherlands), and JFM Associate Editor Colm Caulfield (Cambridge University). JFM Associate Editor Ke-Qing Xia, who joint SUSTech two months ago, also attended the Symposia and chaired the morning section.

Chen Shiyi opened the Symposia with a speech. He welcomed the JFM editorial board to SUSTech and introduced SUSTech to the attendees.

The one-and-a-half-day symposia saw special reports from Charles Meneveau, Colm Caulfield, and Detlef Lohse. Professors from SUSTech, University of Hong Kong, Peking University, and Harbin Institute of Technology also provided special reports. A “Best Poster” competition also took place. Two winners were selected from the 16 posters submitted to the JFM editorial board. The winners were SUSTech Ph.D. student Wang Zhibei and Peking University Ph.D. student Chen Kuanyu.

The JFM editorial board also arranged a series of lectures about JFM, including its submission and writing requirements, and its publication processes. During the lectures, the JFM editorial board exchanged ideas with faculty members from SUSTech’s Department of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering to better understand the scale and professional settings.

The Journal of Fluid Mechanics is a leading academic journal in fluid mechanics with a wide range of international influences. It covers the latest advances in basic fluid mechanics research and the application of fluid mechanics in related fields such as aerospace, astrophysics, biochemistry, mechanical engineering, meteorological oceans, materials, geology, acoustics, and combustion.
