Saturday December 8th saw Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) President Chen Shiyi and Nanshan District Mayor Zeng Pai come together for the signing of a cooperation agreement for the construction of the SUSTech-HKUST Joint School of Microelectronics. Professor Yu Hongyu, Executive Director of the SUSTech-HKUST Joint School of Microelectronics, presided over the ceremony.
Chen Shiyi spoke first and expressed his gratitude to Nanshan District for its support of SUSTech. He pointed out that Nanshan District has rich industrial resources and educational resources, and since the establishment of SUSTech in the district, both sides have been increasing the levels of cooperation.
The SUSTech-HKUST Joint School of Microelectronics is a perfect example of this, in that it captures the advantages of major universities across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, focusing on the industrialization and development of talent pipelines of the microelectronics industry.
It will also complement the integrated circuit industry across the entire industry throughout the Greater Bay Area, including Shenzhen and Hong Kong. The development of this industry across the Greater Bay Area will provide a supporting role for the industry across China as a whole.
Zeng Pai spoke next, saying that SUSTech is now attracting academic talents to Shenzhen. Nanshan’s integrated circuit industry started early and has a good foundation, so it had the opportunity to form its industrial and ecological chains. The further development of the integrated circuit industry will be substantially aided by Nanshan District and SUSTech jointly building the SUSTech-HKUST Joint School of Microelectronics.
The SUSTech-HKUST Joint School of Microelectronics will integrate the right people in the right location at the right time and is another major achievement of cooperation between Nanshan District and SUSTech. Zeng Pai anticipated that both sides would continue to work together by pooling the resources of Shenzhen and Hong Kong to create an advertisement of industry-university cooperation across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.
Following the speeches, Deputy District Mayor Lian Cong and Director of Major Projects Office Wang Susheng signed the cooperation contract on behalf of Nanshan District and SUSTech, respectively.
Zeng Pai and Chen Shiyi witnessed the signing, along with senior leaders from the Shenzhen Municipal Science and Technology Innovation Commission, Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau, Nanshan District Government.
SUSTech leaders from the Office of Major Projects, the Preparatory Office of the SUSTech-HKUST Joint School of Microelectronics, the Office of Infrastructure, and the Campus Construction Planning Committee were also in attendance.
Background:
Nanshan District is the center of research and education for Shenzhen. Higher education and high-tech enterprises have gathered in Shenzhen since its earliest days, and it was one of the first locations for regional demonstration bases of the State Council.
The SUSTech-HKUST Joint School of Microelectronics will be built in Baishiling, within Nanshan District. It will bring together famous universities across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, including SUSTech, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the University of Hong Kong (HKU) to serve the economic and development needs of the integrated circuit industry.
The SUSTech-HKUST Joint School of Microelectronics will also promote innovative talent trainings models which improves the quality of those educated by the Joint School, thereby meeting market demand by cultivating research-oriented and innovative talents. The SUSTech-HKUST Joint School of Microelectronics will have a global outlook that will maximize Shenzhen’s integrated circuit industry’s development advantages, by promoting in-depth cooperation of government-industry-university research.
By effectively opening up all aspects of microelectronic technological achievements, from university research to corporate industrialization, the SUSTech-HKUST Joint School of Microelectronics will form an internationalized high-level, research-oriented, world-class, national level research platform. It will provide intellectual support for the continued development of the integrated circuit industry and the third-generation semiconductor industry in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, including Shenzhen. As a result, the cradle of high-end talent will remain in Shenzhen, and Nanshan District.
