January 11-13th saw the Chinese Chemical Society’s Chiral China 2019 Academic Seminar (Seminar) held at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). SUSTech President Chen Shiyi and Dean of the College of Science Yang Xueming attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. More than 540 representatives from domestic research institutes and universities along with R&D experts in chiral science and drugs from around the world attended the Seminar.

The Seminar was hosted by the Chinese Chemical Society and co-organized by the Chiral Chemistry Professional Committee of the Chinese Chemical Society and the SUSTech. Deputy Dean of the College of Science Zhang Xumu served as the chairman of the Seminar and presided over the opening ceremony.

The Seminar was the first meeting after the merger of Chiral China and Molecular Chiral Symposium. With the theme of “Chiral Science and Technology”, the Seminar involved a wide range of research areas. Research areas included the origin of molecular chirality and the mechanism of chiral recognition, the interaction mechanism of chiral molecules and biomacromolecules, resolution, separation and purification of chiral molecules, analysis and detection, various catalytic and chiral mediated enantioselective synthesis and chiral drug synthesis, supramolecular chirality, chirality and self-assembled materials. The latest research progress and development were extensively discussed and exchanged in the Seminar.

38 domestic experts made 14 keynote speeches and 24 oral reports on cutting-edge areas of chiral science and technology.

The conference commended a number of scholars who had made outstanding contributions to the field of chiral chemistry research and presented the Chiral Chemistry Prize of the Chinese Chemical Society to Tang Yong. The Young Chiral Chemistry Prize of the Chinese Chemical Society was shared Du Haifeng, a researcher at the Institute of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wu Zongquan, a professor at Hefei University of Technology, and Zhu Shoufei, a professor at Nankai University.

The Seminar also set up the “Best Poster Award”. 62 graduate students and young researchers domestically conducted wall posters and 6 of them were selected to be “Best Posters” after careful evaluation by the jury.

The Seminar furthered academic exchanges between experts and scholars in the field of chiral science and promoted the influence of Chinese chiral scientific research in China and the rest of the world.
