On August 31 2017, the UK-based Nature Index Publishing Group announced their Nature Index 2017 Tables. The statistics show that in 2017 SUSTech’s Weighted Fractional Count (based on the percentage of authors to have published articles) was 33.26 for the period between April 2016 to March 2017, placing it in 31st position in the Nature Index list of mainland Chinese universities. It is a considerable improvement compared to three years ago when it was #55.
The Nature Index is a new scientific research evaluation index published by the Nature Publishing Group since 2014. It tracks the number of papers published by more than 8,000 organizations in 68 high-quality natural sciences journals, which are commonly used in the field of basic sciences. This method of evaluating scientific research institutions at the highest international academic level is of critical importance, as it will determine their reputations, helping to attract faculty and students as well as funding.
In 2015, the fractional count of SUSTech in the Natural Science Index was 13.88 (for the period between November 2014 to October 2015), ranking 55th in mainland China. In 2016, it was 19.33 (May 2015 to April 2016), moving the university’s rank up to 44th.
