The SUSTech Center of Arts invited the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra to hold a concert themed “Oriental Grace” on May 31st. Attendees included University Council Chairperson Guo Yurong, Secretary-General Chen Siqi, Shenzhen Polytechnic Vice President Dong Zhaojun, Shenzhen Education Bureau Deputy Director Xu Jianling, along with many excited students and faculty members.
The concert started with two popular Cantonese folk songs as a tribute to the Shenzhen local culture. A flute song depicting the beauty of the Yangtze River Estuary Region followed, ahead of the distinctive and high-pitched suona horn song “Hundreds of Birds Faces the Phoenix” dominated the venue.
Next was the famous pipa (lute) solo “Ambush from All Sides,” which illustrated an ancient war zone scene vividly. The focus soon shifted to the present with a contemporary Zheng solo “the Ink Play.” The song kept changing its tones and sentiments, aiming to highlight the diversity of Chinese calligraphy.
The engaging concert continued with a new rendition of the classic Er’Hu song “Horse Race” and the percussion ensemble “The Ox versus the Tiger.” The orchestra closed the night with well-known ensemble songs “Purple Bamboo Melody” and “Blooming Flowers and Full Moon” before receiving rounds and rounds of applause from the audience.
